New Dove Ad Campaign Racist? You Decide
By David ODey | 18 Comments
When I think of Dove, I think of refreshing, revitalizing, body wash. Their marketing and packaging has always caught my eye, and to be honest i find it quite appealing. They often use bright and bold colors, accompanied by some form of a modern gust. The price is well positioned, and the end product is nothing short of fresh. All that said, when I saw there latest ad campaign it nearly knocked me off the floor. I had to do a double take to see if what i was looking at was real. It was like watching a bad parody ad on SNL. The new ad for their VisibleCare body wash collection claims that it is made to improve the look of your skin in a week. Or it may turn a black women into a white women in 3 steps. Depending on interpretation.I will let you interpret the ad yourself, and please post your comments below, as I would enjoy reading them but what is really amazing is that according to an article written in the Huffington Post “is that no one at the company seems to have anticipated that people would find it offensive.” REALLY…I mean REALLY?
Now I will be upfront, personally I was not offended, keep in mind I am also Caucasian, however what I did see, was an ad that would for sure create negative attention. One thing I learned while beginning my career in advertising and design is that if an ad or a marketing piece does not draw positive attention through words or imagery, its best to go another direction. Better safe then sorry.
Pushing boundaries seems to be common in advertising, however its hard to believe that Dove soap would go that far out on a limb, to make this intentional, and if this is intentional shame on them. My guess is its likely poor decision making, and lack of African Americans in the firms management, that landed this ad in publications.
One thing is for sure, it potentially puts a bad taste in peoples mouths. The same people who may now think twice before buying a Dove product.
What are your thoughts on this ad piece?

What Makes Twitter So Popular?

On Monday the MLB Home Run derby took place and for the first time players tweeted during the derby. This social media experiment, requested by the MLB, allowed players to tweet, take pictures & video and share them on Twitter. It also allowed players to communicate directly with fans. I think this is really cool from a technology standpoint, but beyond that will it really catch on?

I’m sorry but I don’t see that myself. I see a skincare product that’s being advertised as suitable for everyone, no matter what your skin colour. I think reading it as a 1,2,3 step to White skin is maybe trying to read between lines that don’t exist. I wouldn’t have thought that at all.
Slightly off on a tangent but…
If you want to see truly shocking, go to the likes of Philippines where skincare products produced by EVERY leading brand known all Market themselves as having ‘skin whitening’ properties. That’s bizarre! As a pasty White girl I was dumbfounded by how women would want skin like mine, but then all White girls I know wear fake tan. I guess it’s always a case of wanting what you don’t have.
Thanks for the comment, ill have to look into Phillippines skin care products. I like bizarre.
You’re reading way too much into this. I agree totally with the previous poster. There’s nothing offensive here.
I had to look several times before I understood the problem. Yes, at first I thought it was racist and objectionable. (I’m white.) But after a closer look I understood the “before and after” was referring to the skin samples and not the ladies. If I were Dove, I’d redesign the ad ASAP to avoid any further misunderstandings.
You hit the mark, as that is the same way I felt when i first saw the ad. We have to remember, the question should not be “is the ad racist” but the question is “can this ad be interpreted as racist” and misunderstood. Two different questions with different answers, both bringing about negative attention.
Good points, thanks!
It looks to me like a ‘gradation’, from the left to the right. That they printed “Before” and “After” directly above the women’s heads is what makes it look that way, like a progression. They left it an open suggestion, whether they meant to or not.
Having said that, I will be the first one to admit that racism is on my mind, in the first place because of the way things have been in this society. I grew up in the sixties, in the south, when segregation was the rule. I’ve seen it evolve and, while it is not a perfect world, things are a far cry better than they were! When I see something like this, I wonder. It could have been handled much better simply by rearranging the women.
Su
Whats puzzling is that by a simple rearrange as you mentioned, the obvious misunderstanding, would be clear and deemed not questionable. Bad judgement call on their end. Thanks for the comment
I agree that you reed too much into it, the skin before and after is about the condition of it. And Maybe theres an unfortunate placement of the models.
I personally wouldn’t find it racist/offensive, however it is poor planning on the part of their design team just because it is so easy to be misinterpreted! Advertising should be well thought out and have a clear message. Whether intentionally racist/provocative or not, this would definitely have been considered at planning stages.
In the world of political correctness we now live in, Dove might want to reconsider this particular campaign.
This is foreseeable and easily avoidable (A-B testing with focus groups?), so why not take that extra bit of precaution that shows that your brand cares?
The fact that someone doesn’t find it offensive doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s not.
Although the “true” message of the ad is not racist, the room for misinterpretation is just too big to go unnoticed. And if the people responsible for this ad, claim that this is just an oversight, then maybe they should rethink their career options. Even the gradation on the floor coming from darker tones to lighter ones does the same suggestion than the images of the women with the text above it.
As a woman of color, I am not offended. But it is a classic example of bad design. Very bad design.
Really? Racist? Not at all. All I see is three different skin types. If anyone really sees this as a racist ad then they have really thought too far into the ad. I was actually looking through the type and reading it to try to find the racist notion. Being 1/2 African-American myself, I find this anything but racist.
All I see here is 3 different ethnicities that have used this body wash and now all have beautiful skin after use.
Is it overt? Is it intended? Not at all. But the visual you are seeing is not an accident. In the ski industry, I work in a technical field alongside very talented designers, much like a company the quality of Dove would employ. I have learned that designers don’t design by accident. Otherwise, they would be us regular folks without any design talent.
The page is brown to light from left to right and from back to front. The effect is constant through the women, the floor, the displayed swatches. My experience tells me that for a designer at this level, the visual was definitely intended. Now it likely was not intended for reasons of visual and not of racism but how many of us “study” an ad to make sure we saw what was intended? Simply scanning past this had can have a subtle effect.
A white designer could easily make this ad based solely on the color visuals without understanding the historical and social implications. Further more, they would likely never make an effort to understand these issues for it is something they are unlikely to deal with on any regular basis.
Parents don’t teach their kids that light people are better than dark people, but kindergarteners (of many colors) routinely pick photos of light skin people being smarter, prettier and more trustworthy even today. They watch TV, movies and advertisements.
Here is how that can happen:
Are my co-workers racist? No, but their children don’t see me, other black or other minority adults invited into their home (unless it is a 40 person BBQ). The children all learn without instruction that white adults are invited inside the house. Minority adults are mostly relegated to performing yard or other services. A coworker’s child was asked if he remembered me. He yelled “COPS!”, his favorite TV show, in response. The parent was very embarrassed and would never have taught such a thing. However it also escaped that parent, living in an extremely white community, that it might not be a good idea that a child’s predominant exposure to minorities is watching them get arrested by police officers on a TV show. Surely the parent knows that kids like police and police related stuff and didn’t see beyond that.
Is it intended? No way.
Did it have an unintended racial effect? It definitely did.
Great analysis! Thanks for the comment.
I stared at the ad for at least a minute, many different thoughts running through my mind. I was extremely interested to read through all the comments people have left here — then *very* impressed with what “anon” (why anonymous?!) wrote above. His (or her?) analysis provided a design-oriented, meaningful perspective from which one can view this ad, which I very much appreciated. Will be interested to check back in a bit to see what more people contribute to this debate.
No, I didn’t get that impression at all. They appeared to try and show some diversity in their models, one fuller sized and three different races. It doesn’t seem to suggest anything about lightening skin, just taking care of it.
not at all, when I viewed it, the before and after was obviously not pointing to the girls in front of the 2 large images. but on those large image itself,
