I read this article with interest because I recently bought a Macbook Pro (laptop). I have been a freelance graphic designer since 1992, having started on a Mac Performa 200 (3 mbs)! I switched to PC in 1994 and have worked for 12 years as a book designer, using PC exclusively. But my son, who is in his late 20s and a programmer, encouraged me to make the switch and I'm happy with my choice. About 20% of my work is still done on my desktop PC because these are projects that were started on PC and are not yet complete, but they will be by the end of summer. I'm looking forward to being on Mac only by the fall.

The Mac is really really fast. I don't worry about viruses or have to constantly try to figure out weird notices or if something is a virus or trojan or if paying for virus protection is worth the trouble...No crashes thus far and tons of space.

I do not feel it is imperative for a designer to have a Mac. I designed over 200 books without one. But I am happy with my new Mac and excited to see what the future holds and what projects I will load it up with!

I'd have to disagree on this one. I use twitter the most of all social networks, even on a personal level. Facebook is littered with crap; thousands of photos, farm crops, 22 year old girls who have "recently searched for me" on the garbage ads on the right, and a bunch of people I know well enough to pick up the phone and call if need be.

Twitter is much different. I can check in to see what others think of a television show, book, wordpress plugin, or anything else instantly. If you have your followers broken down into structured lists, you will read nearly all of their tweets. I have met and remain friends with so many new people, I couldn't even begin to tell you.

Part of the commitment you need to make when using twitter, is that it takes longer to get to know someone, but the quality of connections is so much higher in the long run. You can focus on any subject on earth, drill down to the more meaningful participants and join in nearly any conversation. I find twitter a much friendlier and less cliquey environment. Everyone seems much more open to talk to anyone about anything.

Once you get accustomed to using twitter on a more personal level, you will find you like it that much more. My wife and I even use it to message back and forth constantly.

I do think twitter is not much used for a general user. Or i just feel like you, i wont twit about my personal life and for business is kind of perfect. the way you collect your network around one subject and share knowledge around. And yea, 140 more then enough. Btw your image at post made me laugh: "no one read you stupid twits" :D ahaha

If you take a $2500 windows pc or laptop vs a $2500 macbook pro imac or mac, you will get the same performance.lets be realistic here, the windows pc would have better performance. The viruses is an issue that windows needs to fix, you got a point there but dont give some emotional bs about how long it takes photoshop to load on your windows vista. im working off a hp tm2 with 8 gigs of ram and photoshop loads within 8 seconds, it has been tested vs my friends 2011 macbook pro i7 and his starts up only 1 second sooner.

While it is not a bad thing for the designer / agency, because we get paid, i feel it is a bad thing for established companies, Kraft Foods for example had very little positive feedback. How does that help a brand? They took a quintessential logo and made it look generic...

Re- brand is not the bad thing. I think it is necessary for the established companies, If the promotion is well formed then the market never lost for the company, rather it will make some extra attention....
There are lots of huge companies recently change their logos...like STARBUCKS, KRAFT FOODS,HUDSON'S BAY CO.. etc...

I'm with you on this (though check your grammar in a couple places!). People were furious when The Gap rebranded. Burger King went through a logo facelift in a hope to spur sales, and it made them look cheap. A decade later, they instead realized that keeping their brand intact was crucial, and instead only changed a subsection of their advertising to be more bold. The buildings haven't changed, the menu hasn't changed, but one smiles when they read the cute messages on their packaging or see a new commercial.

A solid brand identity has nothing to do with being "current" or "modern", though a limited time sub-brand (Tyson Anytizers for example... though I hate the name) can be brought about to help sell products, and give identity to a certain subsection of the brand successfully. The Tyson logo itself has remained the same, with only color and MINOR font changes over 50 years, and the changes certainly didn't come as part of an entire rebranding.

New branding implies change. If a company has loyal customers, that change may not be viewed as a good thing, and you certainly can't replace years of dedicated business by attracting a few new customers.

I am a Logo Designer and I had a an unofficial survey, that what designers would choose if they had a choice of Coke vs Pepsi to drink. The most of the designers went for Coke, I guess if we divide the factors of choosing coke instead of Pepsi by designers is 10% of taste and 80% for the attractive advertising campaign and appealing Logo, as designer always go for things which speak artistically.

Again Sorry to Pepsi :)

I have $185K laying around for that. So are they able to resell domains under that .whatever as in if you bought .car could you sell audi.car or chevy.car? I know they're doing this because good .com's are getting hard to find. I don't know how often I'v looked for a domain and it has been taken and points to a website that hasn't been updated in 5 years. That does get a little frustrating, but I'm not sure this is the answer.

The new United logo had an opportunity to be friendly, modern, humble. Instead, it looks more corporate than before. It looks like "the banker airline". Fly the boring skies. Wouldn't have been my choice, but I have to assume their research told them to go in this very serious direction. Maybe the message is "we are financially stable".

I see the use of the tattoo in the movie as a creative commentary and definitely it falls under the First Amendment. The makers of the movie MUST NOT throw money around in a settlement. Stand on principal.

All of these virtue, a graphic designer should be Creative and understand the required design of the client. Because there is a difference in an artist and designer. an Artist can draw any things, but the designer only can design for the business purpose.

Thanks for the comment, actually you brought up a good point, that i forgot to mention.

Let me clarify. My HP was a 2008 model, it had total of 4gb of ram and 750mb hd. It had an AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ / 2.6 GHz, 1mb l2 cache.

SO my mac has 4 gb of ram, 1tbhd and a 3.06 dual core, 2mb l2 cache, on paper its a bit better, yes.

Before i got my mac I had been a pc guy for 14 years, i have a degree in computer science and the first os worked on was ms windows 3.1 for workgroups, I am all to familiar with the PC world.

For me I will just never go back to a PC.

So you are telling me that when you updated your system..well I am assuming the Mac + CS5 system had newer hardware then the Vista + Cs3 system..that it ran faster? That's crazy talk.

I work PC at home and Mac at the office. Honestly they run the same, they both have crashed on me, both have faults. Really it comes down to personal preference.
