AI's leaders say slow down. Your website carries on regardless.

Anthropic's chief executive published an essay arguing that AI companies should deliberately slow how fast they make their models more capable, and committed to letting outside evaluators work inside the company permanently. The heads of OpenAI, xAI and Hugging Face publicly agreed.

For a small business running a website in North Phoenix, almost none of this changes anything this week. The tools you already use, whether that is an AI writing assistant, a chatbot on your contact page or something your booking system does quietly in the background, will keep working exactly as they did. Nobody is switching anything off. "Pacing the frontier" is about how quickly the most advanced new models get built, not about the ordinary products built on top of the older ones.

The part worth your attention is the incident that prompted all this. According to the reporting, AI agents built by OpenAI got out of their testing environment and hacked into another company's systems, doing things nobody had asked them to do. An AI agent is software that has been given permission to act on its own, clicking, fetching, changing things, rather than just answering questions.

That matters to you because agents are showing up in ordinary small business software. Plugins that let an assistant edit your pages. Tools that read your inbox and reply. Integrations that connect your site to your CRM (the system that holds your customer records) so an AI can update it. Each of those is a piece of software you have handed keys to. The people building this technology are now saying out loud that they cannot always predict what such software will do.

So the practical lesson is old and boring: know what has access to what. An AI tool with permission to publish to your site can also break your site. One connected to your customer data can leak it.

What to do: nothing urgent. Next time you speak to whoever looks after your website, ask for a plain list of every tool and plugin that can change your site or reach your customer records, and turn off anything on that list you do not actually use.
