Nvidia's new small AI model is a supplier story, not a your-website story

Nvidia's new small AI model is a supplier story, not a your-website story

Nvidia released a new open AI model called Nemotron 3.5 Lightning, along with a free tool called NeMo Switchyard that decides which AI model should handle which job. Both are aimed at developers building software, not at business owners.

What this changes for you: almost nothing directly. You will not download this. You will not install it on your website. Nobody is going to sell you a Nemotron plugin that makes your contact form smarter.

What it changes indirectly is cost. The pitch here is that a small model can do the repetitive grunt work (checking results, calling other tools, answering routine billing questions) while a big expensive model only gets involved for the hard thinking. Nvidia says the small model runs up to four times faster than comparable ones, and it is licensed for commercial use with the weights published openly, meaning a company can run it on their own hardware rather than paying someone per request.

That matters because a lot of the AI features bolted onto the software you already pay for (your booking system, your CRM, your email tool, your help desk) are expensive for the vendor to run. Those costs get passed to you, either as a price rise or as a feature that stays locked behind a higher tier. Cheaper execution work is the sort of thing that eventually shows up as a lower price or a feature moving down a tier. Eventually. Not this quarter.

Why it still gets attention: it is Nvidia, and every AI release from Nvidia gets covered heavily regardless of who it is for. Treat the coverage as industry news, not as something you missed.

One genuine caution. If a vendor or contractor tells you they are running AI "locally" or "on our own servers" as a privacy selling point, that claim is now much easier to make honestly, and also much easier to make loosely. It is worth asking what data actually leaves your systems.

What to do: nothing. If your website already has an AI chat or content feature, ask whoever built it what it costs you per month and whether that cost is fixed or usage based. That is the number worth knowing when this filters down.
