Microsoft has announced that from November, cloud gaming on Xbox Game Pass will come with a monthly hour limit instead of unlimited use. The top tier gets 15 hours. Extra time can be bought separately, at a price not yet announced.
This is a gaming story, and if nobody in your house plays Xbox it changes nothing for you. But the reason Microsoft gave is worth a minute of your attention, because it is the same reason your business software bills may move around over the next couple of years. Microsoft said the cost of running the service grows as more people use it and play for longer, so it is moving to limits in order to keep offering it. That is the plainest version of an argument that is being made across the industry right now. Running things in someone else's data centre costs money, that cost is going up, and companies that sold flat monthly pricing are working out how to stop losing money on their heaviest users.
For a small business, the places this tends to show up are: website hosting where "unlimited bandwidth" turns into a fair use cap, email sending tools that start counting sends more strictly, file storage where the free tier shrinks, and anything with AI features bolted on, where the generous introductory allowance gets trimmed once the vendor sees the real bill.
None of this is a crisis. It is a budgeting issue. The businesses that get caught out are the ones who set up a service years ago, never looked at the plan again, and then find a surprise charge or a service that stops working mid-month.
What to do
Probably nothing today. But next time you are going through your accounts, pull out the list of monthly software and hosting charges and note which ones are sold as unlimited. Those are the ones most likely to change. If a service is genuinely important to how you take bookings, take payments or send email, it is worth knowing now what happens if you go over a limit: does it cost more, or does it just stop? Ask your developer or whoever set it up. It is a five minute conversation.
