Why Is My Website So Slow?

Why Is My Website So Slow?

Most slow websites come down to three things: images that are way bigger than they need to be, hosting that is too weak or too crowded for what the site asks it to do, and old code or plugins piling up in the background. Once we know which of those is the real problem, fixing it is usually straightforward. Guessing at it, on the other hand, wastes time and sometimes money.

Why is my website so slow on phones?

Phones are usually where slowness shows up first because they have less processing power and often a weaker connection than a desktop sitting on home wifi. A site that feels fine on a laptop can crawl on a phone if the images were never resized for a smaller screen, if the page is loading extra scripts for menus or sliders nobody uses on mobile, or if the hosting takes an extra second or two to respond before anything even starts loading. Phones also get hit harder by "render blocking" code, which is just a technical way of saying the browser has to stop and wait on something before it can show you the page.

The fix almost always starts with the images, since photos make up most of the weight on a typical small business page. After that it is worth looking at how many different plugins, trackers, or third party widgets are running, because each one adds its own delay. If you want someone to actually look at your pages on a real phone and tell you what is slowing them down, that is exactly what website speed optimization is for.

Do images or hosting matter more for website speed?

Images usually matter more, simply because they make up the biggest chunk of what a browser has to download on most small business sites. A single photo straight off a phone camera can be five or ten times larger than it needs to be for the web, and if a page has six or eight of those, the slowdown is obvious before you even get to hosting. Hosting matters too, especially cheap shared hosting where your site is sitting on the same server as hundreds of others, but for most businesses it is the second problem, not the first.

The two also interact. Good hosting can serve a heavy, badly optimized page reasonably fast. Weak hosting will make even a lean, well built page feel sluggish. So the honest answer is that you want both handled, not one or the other. If nobody has looked at either side of your site in a while, ongoing care that includes website maintenance covers backups, updates, and speed and uptime monitoring together, starting from $99 a month, so small problems get caught before they turn into a slow, frustrating site.

How fast should a small business website load?

A small business website should load its main content in two to three seconds or less, and ideally feel usable well before that. Visitors do not wait around to find out if your site is worth the delay. They leave, and on mobile they leave even faster than on desktop. Search engines also pay attention to load speed, so a slow site can quietly cost you visibility even if nobody ever complains to your face.

That said, the number itself matters less than the pattern. If your homepage loads in under two seconds but your booking page or product pages take six or seven, that gap tells you exactly where to focus. The goal is not a perfect score on some testing tool, it is a site that feels quick and solid wherever someone actually clicks around on it.

If you are not sure where your site stands, the simplest way to find out is to have someone look at it directly rather than guess from a generic report. A free website audit gives you a plain explanation of what is slowing your site down, whether that is images, hosting, old code, or some mix of the three, and what it would actually take to fix it.

The checkup is free. We look at what you have, tell you plainly what we would do about it, and that holds true even if you never hire us.
